Why Family Engineering

Mom & DaughterWe need more engineers - but the number of science
and engineering students in the U.S. is declining.

     • The demand for scientists and engineers will grow
        by 44% in ten years.
         (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
     • U.S. universities had 11% fewer engineering
graduates in 2005 than in 1985.

We need more diverse engineers.

Research confirms that children and parents have a very limited understanding of what engineers do.

     • 85% of kids aged 8-17 are not interested in a future engineering career
     • Only 20% of parents    have or will encourage their children to consider an engineering
career.  American Society for Quality Survey (Harris Interactive, 2008)

Parental involvement is a key factor in a child’s academic success and career choices.
     • Most consistent predictors of academic achievement and social adjustment are parent         expectations. (Reynolds, et al)
     • Family participation in education was twice as predictive of student academic success as
        family socioeconomic status. (Walberg, 1984)

We need to inform and engage children in learning about engineering at an early age.
     • Student’s attitudes about careers in science, math and engineering are often formed
        before the high school years.
     • Elementary children are at an ideal age for initiating career exploration and are more
likely than older children to enjoy doing educational activities with their parents.

Family Engineering supports the National Academy of Engineering’s campaign to “change the conversation” about engineers by supporting the message that:
     • Engineers make a “world of difference.”
     • Engineering is essential to our health, happiness,
        and safety.
     • Engineers help shape the future.
     • Engineers are creative problem-solvers.

Family Engineering begins the conversation between
parents and children about the exciting world of engineering.
